Nairobi National Park tickets: Quick overview

  • Ways to explore: Nairobi National Park offers guided half-day drives, sunrise drives, full-day combos, and the separate Safari Walk.
  • Guide style: Game drives include a live driver-guide; Safari Walk is self-guided.
  • Private or shared: Choose private for flexible pacing, or shared for a lower per-person cost.
  • Vehicle choice: Premium 4x4s handle rougher tracks better; open-top vans usually cost less.
  • How much time: Game drives run about 4–5 hours; full-day combos take 7–9 hours; Safari Walk takes about 1.5–2 hours.
  • Extra access: Only the full-day combo adds the Elephant Orphanage and Giraffe Centre, which matters because the orphanage visit runs in a fixed 11am–12pm window.
  • Fees and queues: There’s no true skip-the-line; prepayment only avoids gate payment. Most game drives exclude the separate KWS park fee, and cash isn’t accepted.

Step into the savanna sunrise

Enter the main gate at 6am as mist rises off the golden plains.Game drives unfold over a 117-square-kilometer reserve situated just 10 kilometers from Nairobi's central business district.Plan 4 to 5 hours for the best wildlife loop.

The skyline safari

Nowhere else on Earth frames a free-roaming pride of lions, herds of zebras, or endangered black rhinos against a backdrop of towering city skyscrapers.Keep your camera focused on the horizon for this iconic, globally unique visual contrast.

A haven for black rhinos

As East Africa's premier rhino sanctuary, the park offers incredibly reliable sightings of the highly endangered black rhino.Scan the whistling thorn acacias where they graze in the cool morning hours before retreating into thicker brush.

Walk the hippo pools

Step out of your safari vehicle along the Athi River on a designated walking trail. Accompanied by armed park rangers, stroll under giant yellow fever trees to observe hippos submerged in deep pools and crocodiles basking on the banks.

Bundle with the suburban cluster

Extend your safari by pairing the wild plains with the neighboring Lang'ata and Karen suburbs.Feed Rothschild's giraffes at the Giraffe Centre and watch rescued baby elephants drink giant formula bottles at the David Sheldrick Nursery nearby.

Things to know before booking your tickets to Nairobi National Park

  • The separate entry ticket mandate: A standard safari booking only covers your vehicle, fuel, guide, and hotel transfers. It does not include park entrance fees. To ensure you pay the correct government tariff, you must purchase your conservation ticket online via the cashless eCitizen portal before arrival.
  • Cashless eCitizen payment system: Kenya's national parks are strictly cashless. All entrance tickets must be paid in advance using your credit card or M-Pesa on the government eCitizen system. Once payment is processed, keep a digital copy of the QR code on your phone or print a physical copy to be scanned at the gate.
  • Safari Walk tickets include entry: Unlike vehicle-based drives, our Nairobi Safari Walk tickets include direct admission. At checkout, you must select your correct citizenship variant and provide a valid passport or ID number to match the government gate scanners.
  • Diurnal timing maximizes predator sightings: Lions, cheetahs, and endangered black rhinos are most active in the early morning. Always opt for a morning safari departure (6am to 11am). When afternoon temperatures rise, predators retreat deep into the acacia thickets, making them much harder to spot.
  • Sheldrick Nursery's strict midday window: The David Sheldrick Elephant Nursery only opens to the public for exactly one hour daily from 11am to 12pm. Due to a hard capacity limit of 200 visitors, slots sell out weeks in advance. Entry contributions ($25 for non-resident adults) must be paid directly on arrival.
  • Seasonal road constraints and mud risks: During the wet seasons (April–May and November–December), heavy rains saturate the park's unpaved black cotton soils. Standard open-top safari vans can struggle with traction; booking a 4x4 Land Cruiser variant is strongly advised during these months to prevent getting stuck.
  • Document verification rules: KWS scanners strictly enforce citizenship tiers. You must carry your physical passport (for international non-residents and African citizens) or National ID (for East African citizens) to match your purchased ticket category. Tourist visas do not qualify you for resident rates.

Rothschild's Giraffes

Distinguished by their smooth, warm brown patches and clean white "stockings" below the knees.

Leopards

Highly camouflaged; look for them lounging in the branches of yellow fever trees near river bends.

Pygmy Hippos & Bongos

Spot these rare forest species from the elevated walkways of the Safari Walk.

Visiting Nairobi National Park with kids?

  • Stroller accessibility: The Nairobi Safari Walk features fully stroller-friendly wooden boardwalks and ramps. Core park game drives occur on bumpy unpaved dirt tracks, which are not suitable for strollers.
  • Optimal duration: Choose our 4-to-5-hour half-day morning drive. It aligns with cooler temperatures, active wildlife, and matches shorter attention spans.
  • Food and restrooms: There are no food vendors inside the savanna core. Pack plenty of snacks and water, and plan bathroom stops at the designated picnic areas.

Visitor tips

  • Start at 6am: Predators and black rhinos are most active before the heat builds.
  • Use Main Gate: Langata Road access is simplest for game drives and Safari Walk.
  • Pack a light layer: Dawn drives can feel cold at 13–18°C.
  • Head for water: Hyena Dam and the Athi River pull wildlife in dry months.
  • Try Athi Basin Loop first: Open plains improve lion, rhino, and buffalo visibility.
  • Pause at Leopard Cliff: It gives sweeping views across plains, woodland, and riverine habitat.
  • Plan DSWT tightly: Elephant Nursery viewing runs only from 11am to 12 noon.
  • Treat Safari Walk separately: It’s a boardwalk habitat trail, not an open-habitat safari.
  • Pre-pay your KWS entry fee through eCitizen before you arrive: Cash isn't accepted at the gate, and carry your passport or national ID; your citizenship status determines your ticket price and is checked on arrival.
